In 1948, property was purchased in Cowley County (along the Arkansas River just south of Arkansas City, Kansas) to establish a campground for Kansas Yearly Meeting of Friends youth camps. This was the culmination of several years of searching for a place after they had outgrown the camp facilities they had been using. When the leaders drove out to the property, they felt "this is it!" They had never felt that way about any of the other places.
By July 1950, camp was held on the grounds with a mixture of permanent structures, such as the dining hall and bath houses, and temporary tents. Over the next several years, buildings continued to be added until the camp plan was completed. 1955 saw the completion of the chapel, and dedication of the David E. Cox Memorial Pool in 1969. Many changes and additions to the facilities have been made over the years to meet the needs.
Camp Quaker Haven today serves not only as a camp for EFC-MAYM, but for many other denominations and groups throughout the year. It has been a great tool for ministry and has allowed God to be introduced in many lives over these years. Many have developed deeper spiritual lives through camp experiences.
